As a climate activist, I know that scaring people most often triggers a defensive reaction. After Al Gores defeat in 2000, activists, including Republican ones, thought they could sell the idea to their base if they used a more benign term. Obviously they failed. It’s not clear the term is to blame. While doing something about global warming is popular, actual policies like carbon pricing are less so, although they are getting more popular every year as people feel the heat.

That said, since all of these changes result directly from a positive change in Earths energy balance, I say “global warming” or “anthropogenic global warming, AGW, which is accurate and on point.
